Purulent atheroma: causes and minimally invasive treatment
author: doctor Alafinov V.D.
Purulent atheroma is an acute microbial inflammation of the contents of a sealed and stretched sebaceous cutaneous gland. Sebaceous glands are located in the thickness of the skin and closely adjacent to the hair follicles. These glands produce fatty grease for hair and skin. When plugging the excretory ducts, cysts can be formed - pouches filled with a pulp-like sebaceous mass. In all places where hair grows and there are sebaceous glands, atheromas can form. Most often they appear in the area of the head, face, back, neck, genitals.
If there are no inflammatory conditions, then the atheroma looks like a rounded tumor-like elastic formation associated with the skin. Usual sizes of an atheroma from several millimeters to several centimeters in diameter. It is not a true tumor. If microbes get into the cavity of the atheroma, they can cause inflammation leading to purulent melting of the fat content. This will be indicated by redness, pain, swelling, fever. If pus melts the skin, then it breaks out on its own. The greatest danger is the spread of pus under the skin. In this case, an extensive inflammation develops - an abscess or phlegmon.
As with any pyoinflammatory process, urgent surgical opening of the purulent cavity is the only correct method of treatment. In an operating or dressing room, atheroma is opened and the contents of the suppurated cyst are removed. To combat bacteria, antimicrobials are used - antiseptics, which wash the purulent cavity. For regular irrigation of the cavity with antiseptics, a special tube is inserted through the wound - drainage. With the help of this drainage, the remains of the contents of the suppurated atheroma are gradually removed. If the suppuration is very pronounced, the doctor may decide to prescribe antibiotics.
When surgical treatment of atheroma, removal of its capsule is of great importance. The remaining parts of the capsule can cause a relapse, that is, the re-formation of the atheroma in the same place. However, with purulent inflammation, the task of removing atheroma with the capsule is difficult. It is possible that after the operation of opening the purulent cavity it will take several weeks for the inflammatory phenomena to be completely eliminated. After this, you can radically operate atheroma with the removal of the cyst shell.
Most surgeons believe that it is necessary to remove atheroma before dangerous complications develop. The operation is usually performed on an outpatient basis, under local anesthesia. Simultaneously with the removal of the formation, a material is taken for histological examination, which is necessary to establish a definitive diagnosis.
Minimally invasive surgery
In addition to the traditional surgical removal of atheroma, innovative laser and radio frequency technologies are used.
With the laser method, the pathological tissue is actually evaporated by the beam of a high-energy surgical laser. Removal of an atheroma by the laser has the features.
Radiofrequency electrosurgery is another modern method for the removal of pathological soft tissues, in particular, atheros. At the same time, a high-frequency alternating electric current is supplied to the working tool-electrode. At the point of contact of the electrode and tissue, a limited zone of high temperature is created, and thermal destruction of atheroma tissue occurs.
It should be borne in mind that for the radio frequency method, a contraindication is the presence of a pacemaker and metal objects in the patient's body (pins, prostheses, etc.). More details can be found on the link: radio wave method of atheroma removal .
Experienced surgeons choose the optimal intervention options depending on the individual characteristics of the patient.
Development of atherogen may be promoted by adverse environmental factors, metabolic and hormonal disorders, leading to increased production of glands of sebum. Atheroma often occurs with oily skin. For the prevention of athere, compliance with the rules of personal hygiene, skin care is very important. It is necessary to avoid food rich in animal fats, digestible carbohydrates (sweet, flour), spicy seasonings.

Ashley Lauren: Why didn’t my dermatologist stuff mine with gauze? We were going to remove the cyst sac but it was too infected like this cyst so he only drained it. He didn’t make an incision and only used the opened pores until the whole cyst was drained out. Any info to give me?

Gaile Faison: Thank you for helping her , I can’t imagine the pain she must have been in before you helped her. Thank you doctor, great job!!
Rana - mechanical damage to tissues with a violation of their integrity. It is proved that for the development of infection in the wound it is necessary to have 105-106 microbial bodies per 1 gram of tissue. This is the so-called "critical" level of bacterial contamination. But the "critical" level may be low. It is now believed that any accidental wound is bacterially contaminated, or infected.

Carbuncle is a purulent disease caused by staphylococcus or streptococcus, when several adjacent hair follicles and sebaceous glands are affected, with purulent inflammation spreading deep, affecting both the skin and subcutaneous tissue, and sometimes the covering of the muscle. There are carbuncles more often one by one (rarely there may be 2-3 on the body). This difference in the initial degree of carbuncle from the boil, which are caused by the same microbes, but on the body are in number of several copies.

Atheroma is a tumor that is benign in clinical and morphological classifications and refers to epithelial cysts. Usually atheroma develops on the hairy areas of the body, so it is more common on the head and face, which are particularly rich in the sebaceous glands. The cause of this tumor (cysts) is a blockage of the duct of these sebaceous glands.

The auricle has a very important function, it, due to its shape, helps to catch sounds and guide them into the ear canal. The auricle is the outer part of the ear and has a cartilaginous structure. And only the ear lobe consists of their fatty tissue and does not contain cartilage. The entire auricle is covered with skin and contains a large number of sebaceous glands.

Skin diseases sometimes look so unpleasant that sometimes even people who are not related to medicine want to cure a sick person. And often it happens. The best doctors are our neighbors, friends and relatives. And then the vanity of vanities begins, and people apply burdocks, plantain, honey, fat to any tumor-like formations, in general, they do everything that in this case does not help, and sometimes even can do much harm.
